A reporter visited several stores and found that winter clothing, which is about to be removed from shelves, is being heavily discounted, drawing crowds of shoppers eager to grab deals. In contrast, newly arrived spring clothes are being displayed but not as actively purchased.
Winter wear is now on sale, with many stores offering discounts ranging from 20% to 50%, alongside clearance sales. These significant price reductions have sparked a wave of excitement among local residents, who are rushing to scan for bargains. Ms. Liu, a resident of Lichun West Road, was seen browsing the discount section at Dennis Department Store on Nanchang Road this morning. “I had my eye on this outfit before the Spring Festival, but it wasn’t discounted then. Now, it’s available at 40% off, saving me over 500 yuan—definitely worth it,†she said.
According to a store owner on Jinghua Road, this winter wasn’t particularly cold, leading to weaker winter sales compared to previous years. As a result, many retailers are struggling with excess winter stock. With spring fashion now hitting the market, they’re pushing for deeper discounts to clear inventory. Although these promotions reduce profit margins, the business owner believes it’s a necessary move to recover capital and improve cash flow.
Meanwhile, spring clothing is being introduced, but the response has been lukewarm. At stores like Dennis, Thousands, and Wangfujing, new spring collections such as blouses, dresses, T-shirts, and knitwear are prominently displayed. Some brands are even offering discounts of up to 90% to attract customers. However, despite the promotions, consumer interest remains low.
At a women’s brand counter on the third floor of Thousands Department Store, a sales associate mentioned that although new spring items were recently introduced, very few were sold. “I’ve hung up dozens of pieces, but no one has bought any yet,†she said. Many consumers feel that the new spring clothes are too light, similar to summer wear, and aren’t suitable for the current weather. Plus, the prices are still quite high, so they prefer to wait for bigger discounts.
A well-known clothing dealer noted that Luoyang’s spring season is short, and the window for spring sales is limited. Many branded spring collections lean toward summer styles, using lightweight fabrics like chiffon and satin. As a result, sales of skirts and shorts have increased. Given the high initial prices, most shoppers are taking a wait-and-see approach, reserving purchases for when more substantial discounts become available.
